Farmers advised to milk reduce summer milkings

9:42 pm on 24 December 2009

Dairy farmers are being advised to consider milking once a day as summer pastures dry up in parts of the country and feed supplies tighten.

Dairy NZ says northern parts of the North Island including Northland, Bay of Plenty and Northern Waikato, are reporting dry pasture conditions that would normally not be expected until mid to late January.

The organisation says this means there will be a limited amount of feed available during the summer months and farmers will need to consider drying off cows or switching to milking once per day.
