Rabbit numbers jump as drought continues

Dry conditions in Northland since last year have resulted in a jump in the rabbit population.

Northland Regional Council says normally wet conditions over the winter months would be enough to keep rabbit numbers down, but the unusually dry weather has increased their survival rates.

Senior biosecurity team leader Don McKenzie says rabbits are loving this drought. However, he expects their numbers will fall drastically by autumn and winter.
