The head of the country's biggest crown research institute, who is stepping down in June, says he's pleased to have played a part in lifting the profile of agriculture and science.

Andrew West has spent six years at the helm of AgResearch in June.

During his tenure as chief executive, Dr West has been at the forefront of efforts to refocus attention on pastoral agriculture - responsible for dairy, meat and wool production - and its importance to the national economy.

He will be looking at opportunities to continue his involvement in primary industry or science and technology.
