Stick to the basics, AFFCO meat company told

The outgoing chief executive of the AFFCO meat company believes sticking to the basics is the best survival tactic in a highly competitive industry.

Stuart Weston, who's leaving AFFCO after three years, says after a turbulent past season, the processor and exporter is having to ration its meat products to customers this year, because the livestock isn't there to meet demand.

He says in those circumstances it would be a mistake to focus on the added-value approach, such as retail-ready packs. The "fancy stuff" is already being done, he says, and does not generate significant additional returns.
