Forestry levy goes to Minister for decision

2:34 pm on 17 July 2013

The Forest Growers Levy Trust has lodged its application to the Government for the introduction of a compulsory levy on all harvested logs.

The application follows the referendum of forest growers earlier this year when 85% of 580 growers who voted supported a levy.

Trust chair Geoff Thompson says the levy of up to 30 cents a tonne of harvested wood, will raise about $6.5 million dollars a year, and will be used to enhance the activity of the forest industry.

Mr Thompson says if the Associate Minister for Primary Industries, Jo Goodhew approves the levy, it will take effect on 1 January 2014.
