Tasman District Council may enforce water restrictions next week if thereis no significant rainfall.
The council says water supplies in some rural areas south and west of Nelson are stretched as river and groundwater levels on the Waimea Plains continue to drop.
Consumers are being urged to reduce water use.
The council says it will decide next week whether to introduce first stage restrictions to reduce water usage by 20%.
