Inquiries will vindicate NZ - Wills

Federated Farmers president Bruce Wills says he believes the multiple inquiries which are being launched into the botulism whey powder incident could vindicate Fonterra and New Zealand.

Mr Wills said that while New Zealand and Fonterra initially started on the backfoot - he has confidence that the four reviews will get to the bottom of the issue which led to global product recalls, consumer anxiety and New Zealand milk products being banned in some countries.

He thinks people will give credit to New Zealand for acting in a prompt way.

"With the minute quantities that were found some may not have quite as prompt to blow the whistle on themselves."

Mr Wills said the inquiries will allow Fonterra and the country to show its international markets the country is transparent and honest.

But he suggested a blanket ban on Fonterra's dairy products introduced by Russia, Belarus and Kazahkstan - is more opportunistic market protectionism than to do with genuine food safety concerns.
