Additional quality measures such as extra checks and more regular servicing of equipment, will be implemented at six plants.

New systems will first be put in place next week at the Hautapu site in Waikato, where contaminated whey protein originated that forced Fonterra to recall several products in New Zealand and overseas in a botulism scare. The problem was announced on 3 August.

Shief executive Theo Spierings said the extra measures are the right thing to do, as the plants make ingredients or products for infants and young children.
