An irrigation scheme in South Canterbury is the latest to receive support from the Government's irrigation acceleration fund.

The Hunter Downs development company is getting $640,000 to help with the design and feasibility stages of its proposal to irrigate up to 40,000 hectares of farmland, or 200 - 300 properties, with water from the Waitaki River.

The project, which is co-funded by Meridian Energy, will establish a team to undertake engineering design work, investigate demand for the scheme and raise funds for the next stages.
