Fate of Shannon fellmongery should be known soon

Staff at Silver Fern Farms skin processing plant near Shannon should know the fate of the plant very soon.

The meat co-operative has been considering an offer from Lowe Corporation to buy the ageing fellmongery, which employs more than 80 workers.

Lowe Corporation has a modern pelt processing plant at Tomoana in Hastings and if the sale goes ahead, Silver Fern would get its processing done there instead.

Silver Fern chief executive Keith Cooper said earlier this week the negotiations were in their final stages and he expected to know the outcome in a few days.

He said it's too early though, to say what would happen to the plant if it's sold.
