The Rural General Practice Network is hosting the launch of a special trust fund to encourage a new generation of healthcare workers into rural areas.

The scholarship honours rural health sector leader Dr Pat Farry, who died suddenly last year while he was working as a locum doctor in Twizel.

The Pat Farry Rural Education Trust was to be launched by his family at the network's conference in Christchurch on Friday.

The network's chair, Kirsty Murrell-McMillan, said the fund is aimed at supporting people wanting to work in rural areas, and their education.

"It's following the spirit of Pat Farry who was a long-term innovator. He started the rural immersion scheme with medical students," she said.
