Synthetic 'eco-friendly' carpets questioned

3:29 pm on 29 March 2010

The local wool industry is questioning why imported, synthetic carpet fabrics are being given a Government green tick.

Marketing firm Wool Partners International says producers are being hard done by the Government-backed labelling programme Environmental Choice.

Wool Partners chief executive Iain Abercrombie says imported synthetic carpets are being endorsed over their natural, biodegradable and locally grown products.

Mr Abercrombie says it costs more for wool carpets to reach the environmental standard, and wool products with the green tick are being passed over for cheaper, synthetic carpets.

Environmental Choice New Zealand says few synthetic carpets meet the high standards required to receive the green tick.
