Log prices predicted to climb further

The forestry sector is expecting to see export log prices climb further, with no sign of the surge in demand from China subsiding.

Sales to South Korea and India have also lifted.

Prices for logs sent to China have risen from about $US80 to $US150 US per cubic metre in a little over a year.

But the export boom has also brought a word of caution from New Zealand's largest forest services company, PF Olsen.

Marketing manager Peter Weblin says though the industry wants to make the most of the overseas demand, it should not neglect the needs of the local processors.
