Chairman disappointed at low key response to visit

Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council chair Garrick Murfitt says he's disappointed with a visit to the Ruapehu district, where he was expecting to meet dozens of irate farmers.

The council's One Plan, covering the management of natural resources over the next 10 years, has generated a great deal of debate and strong opposition from some farmer groups, particularly in Ruapehu.

Groups have called for Government intervention in the region, as they say the plan's conditions for land and water protection will require a consent to farm and could force some out of business.

But Mr Murfitt says only five people took up the chance to talk with him direct about their concerns.

He says the plan is expected to be finalised by July.
