A last round victory saw a Southland farmer win a place in the National Young Farmer contest.

Peter Gardyne, 22, who farms near Gore, was even on points with fellow contestant Elliot Scott going into the final quiz round.

But he clinched the win in the last three questions, taking the Otago/Southland regional title.

Mr Gardyne works on a 650-hectare sheep, beef and arable farm. He will join other regional winners at the Young Farmer grand final in Gore in July.
