NZ shearing championships under way

5:11 pm on 10 April 2010

The New Zealand shearing championships are in full flight at Te Kuiti in the King Country.

One of the main points of interest will be who fills the remaining berth in the New Zealand team for the world championships in Wales in July.

That will be decided by who wins the open shearing title this weekend.

Cam Ferguson, who won the 50th Golden Shears Open title recently, will be one of two machine shearers representing New Zealand.

Shearing Sports New Zealand says competition to fill the other place is particularly keen.

The event marks the end of the domestic season for competition shearing and wool-handling.
