New Zealand shearing legend David Fagan has won his 17th national championships open title at Te Kuiti.
The win, at the weekend, earns him a place in the New Zealand team which will compete in the world shearing and wool handling championships in Wales in three months.
He will be aiming to win the individual world title for a sixth time, and a seventh teams title with his fellow machine shearer, Golden Shears winner Cam Ferguson.
Runner up in the open shearing on Saturday night was Rowland Smith from the Far North, who, at 23, is less than half David Fagan's age.
Gisborne teenager Joel Henare won the open wool-handling title, the youngest to do so.
Another teenager, Sarah Goss of Kimbolton in Manawatu, won the junior final, making her the first woman to win a New Zealand Championships shearing title.
