Water cheat claim unfounded - council

An allegation farmers in South Canterbury tried to avoid water restrictions by making a river's level seem higher than it has been dismissed as false.

Canterbury Regional Council received a call to its tip-line on 7 February saying a weir had been built around the water meter in Pareora River, south of Timaru.

However the council's regional manager, Marty Mortiaux, said he was satisfied nothing untoward happened.

He said an attempt had merely been made to reinstate a diversion channel linking the two main river braids, in order to get the most accurate measurement from the meter.

Mr Mortiaux said water availability was a big issue and it was good the public were concerned enough to report incidents to the council.
