The Austrian company, Riedel Crystal, has been making glassware for 300 years and the 10th generation company owner, Georg Riedel has spent two years perfecting a goblet for the dark red Central Otago drop.

Mr Riedel said the glass was designed to bring out the regional fruit focussed and intense mineral style of the wine.

The Central Otago Winegrowers Association spokesperson Rudi Bauer said pinot noir from the region had very special qualities and the new glass would draw those out.

He said the glass was an important milestone, with Riedel producing stemware which matched many different wine varieties from all over the world.
