A Feilding-based company has won Irrigation New Zealand's inaugural innovation award for its water-saving irrigation system.

Precision Irrigation began developing the variable rate control system four years ago to give farmers better control of the areas that are irrigated.

It was first installed on a North Island dairy farm in 2008 with the aim of keeping water off cow tracks, and is now used by a dozen other farmers.

Company director Stu Bradbury says the system works by remote control, managing each individual sprinkler on an irrigation unit.

Mr Bradbury says the primary driver behind developing the system was to better manage the water used.
