Mexico plans to eliminate a 20% tariff on kiwifruit imports from New Zealand.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Mayorga says he is optimistic that could happen soon. He expects little opposition from farmers in Mexico since there is no domestic kiwifruit production - yet.
But Mexico is scoping out farmland on the Pacific coast for possible kiwifruit production with the help of technicians from New Zealand.
Mr Mayorga says strawberries and other fruit needing similar conditions to kiwifruit are thriving in Mexico's central Pacific states.
He says the idea is still in the exploratory phase and there is no date set for production.
