An Eastern Bay of Plenty farmer has won the national farm environment and Ministry of Agriculture study scholarship award.

John Mackintosh, who farms near Whakatane, will use the $15,000 scholarship to study the cost benefits of farm forestry and look at ways in which trees can be planted for production, shelter and erosion control.

The aim of the scholarship is to allow the winner to undertake a major study relevant to sustainable and profitable farming in New Zealand.
