User-pays training for shearers, wool handlers

The wool industry has agreed on a user-pays system to train its shearers and wool-handlers.

Under the new regime, trainees will have to pay more towards their course fees, with those fees nearly doubling in price.

Shearing contractors president Barry Pullen says farmers will also pay a fee of 1 cent a sheep built into shearing charges, to reflect the end of the contribution they used to make to training through the now-defunct wool levy.

He says the new funding arrangement will move training more into line with other sectors.
