Fonterra's Shareholders' Council, representing the co-op's farmer owners, has announced a new chairman.
Duncan Coull from Otorohanga will replace Ian Brown, who has held the position for the past three years.
Mr Coull said there was sometimes an expectation that most of the council's work was done around a business table in Auckland. He hopes to change that view.
"I take on board what farmers are saying around lack of transparency, but it's around connecting and I think Council has a role to connect with farmers.
"There's a lot of misinformation out there as well, so I think council has a role to play in that and keeping farmers informed and abreast of the issues within Fonterra."
Former chair Mr Brown will continue to represent South Waikato farmers on the shareholders council.
