Pruning slowed by rain

8:08 am on 7 August 2010

Apple and kiwifruit pruning has slowed in the Nelson region this week after about 45mm of rain.

Tree planting will continue when conditions are drier.

With payments for last year's crop due to start arriving, Country Life reports the high New Zealand dollar is a major concern for all growers.

Elsewhere, green kiwifruit growers in Bay of Plenty are reported to be flat out applying 'hi cane' whenever there's a break in the weather.

It's a chemical used to promote even bud break, while gold growers are waiting for bud break.
