Cannabis growers 'taking revenge' on farmers

9:05 am on 17 July 2008

Tension is rising between farmers and vandals in north Taranaki.

Farmers in Okoki say cannabis growers are taking revenge on those they blame for helping police carry out raids on drug crops found growing on their land.

Sheep and cattle farmer Colin Bird had more than a 1km of fencing on his farm cut two weeks ago, causing $10,000 of damage.

Mr Bird says locals fear that the situation could get much worse. He says there is no conflict between farmers in the area.

Police in Waitara have met with locals over the situation.

The vandalism is being investigated and police cannot rule out the possibility of it being drug related.
