Turnout high at ETS seminars - ministry

1:42 pm on 18 August 2010

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry says there has been a tremendous response from land owners with forest blocks to seminars about the Government's scheme to reduce carbon emissions.

The Government has decided that exotic forests planted before 1990 are a significant storehouse of carbon, but also a potential source of carbon emissions if the trees are felled and the land is not replanted.

It has decided forest owners can choose a one-off allocation of free carbon credits, or apply for an exemption from penalties under the Emissions Trading Scheme.

MAF is holding seminars around the country on the proposals and says the turnout has been high.
