Assistance sought with storm clean-up

Moves are under way to seek Task Force Green assistance from the Government to help with the clean-up from last week's storms.

Farmers in regions stretching from Northland to Canterbury have been left with kilometres of ruined fences, washed out culverts and slip-covered access ways.

Manawatu-Rangitikei Federated Farmers president Gordon McKellar says Task Force Green help will be needed to clear the large number of trees brought down by the wind which battered the Horowhenua district and part of Manawatu.

He says he has talked to some farmers who have had 400-500 trees blown down, and others who lost farm buildings in the storm.

Mr McKellar says the Rural Support Trust will also be offering its services to farming families who might be in financial strife as a result of the storm, which comes on top of the summer's drought.
