Waikato River levels fall

3:41 pm on 6 August 2008

The Waikato River is dropping as flood peaks pass along the river system and out to sea.

Waikato Regional Council says the river downstream to Rangiriri is falling. From there through to the river mouth, the waterway is approaching its peak.

The Waipa River, which flows into the Waikato, is also receding.

The regional council says the river will remain high for several days and ponding on low-lying land will continue.

The Waikato region has received less than 10 millimetres of rain over the past 24 hours.

However, there is the possibility of heavy rain over southern and western catchments on Friday and Saturday.
