No drought declaration in South Marlborough

12:52 pm on 15 August 2008

Marlborough District Council is not going to issue any declaration of drought in South Marlborough.

The Rural Support Trust asked the council to declare parts of South Marlborough as a 'drought affected area' last month, after three years of extremely dry conditions.

Environment committee chair, Graeme Taylor says there's no longer a need for a formal drought declaration due to recent rainfall.

Trust rural co-ordinator Ian Blair accepts the council's decision, but says the ongoing effects of the past three years will last for another 12 - 18 months.

He says there's been approximately 450mm less rain over the past three years and is surveying farmers to find out what their drought recovery needs are.

Another meeting will be held with the district council next month.
