Collapsed silo numbers growing

12:47 pm on 8 September 2010

Grain farmers in Canterbury continue to take a hit with the number of collapsed silos growing by the day.

Nearly 40 silos were initially reported damaged in Saturday's quake. The tally is now more than 50.

Federated Farmers says more than 8000 tonnes of milling wheat have already been cleaned up.

North Canterbury grain chair, Murray Rowlands, says farmers need to know if they will be covered by insurance, receive some kind of Government assistance or to foot the bill themselves.

A meeting to address these matters will be held at Darfield High School at 4.30pm on Thursday.
