Fonterra is increasing its production of long life milk by 30% to meet a growing demand in Asia and the Pacific.
It has finished an $8 million expansion and upgrade of an ultra heat-treated milk plant in Auckland that will allow it to produce another 600,000 packs per week.
Fonterra says the additional production will allow it to expand sales in China, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as start exporting to new markets such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
UHT milk does not need refrigeration and has a nine month shelf life.
