Farm worker in hospital after quad bike accident

A farm worker from Hawke's Bay is in hospital with multiple fractures to his face and head following a quad bike accident.

The rescue helicopter pilot who flew the man, aged 22, to hospital on Sunday described the injuries as horrific.

A rural contractor in Hawke's Bay says serious injuries and deaths from quad bike accidents will continue, unless roll bars are made mandatory.

Brian Kirk has been unsuccessfully advocating for five years for bikes to be made safer, with roll bars.

He says there have already been two fatal incidents this year and farmers should be allowed to fit a roll bar if they wish, without losing their warranty.
