Danger warning issued about damaged silos

6:36 am on 15 September 2010

Federated Farmers says some crop farmers are risking their lives, trying to remove grain from silos damaged in the Canterbury earthquake.

Mid Canterbury Grain and Seeds chair David Clark says more and more silos have been found to be damaged structurally, or to have cracks in the concrete base.

He said silos on a lean can become top heavy as they are unloaded and could collapse.

So far, he says there are reports of 69 seriously damaged silos, but the final number could easily be more than 100.
