Widespread rural disruption from storm

6:02 am on 22 September 2010

Power cuts and localised flooding have continued to cause widespread disruption in rural communities in the North Island.

The Powerco lines company has been working since Friday to restore services to customers in areas stretching from Coromandel to Wairarapa.

Severe wind gusts on Tuesday brought down more trees onto lines, knocking out power to thousands more properties.

Barb Evans, who's on a sheep and beef farm at the top of the Waitotara valley in the Whanganui district, says they have been having power cuts since Saturday.

But she says this winter has not been as bad as last year when they had 'quite a few' power cuts.

She says slips also closed the Waitotara Valley road for a while on Monday.

Wairarapa dairy farmer, Graeme Stuart from near Masterton, had to use his generator earlier in the week to run his milking shed when the power went down for five - six hours.

But he says the high winds have also been causing power surges, when lines are blown together, and that's been disruptive and costly, too.

Robert Ervine who's dairy farm lies in a loop of the Manawatu River near Opiki, has not lost his power.

But most of his farm has been under water twice in the past fortnight .
