Another sale cancelled: just not enough wool

5:57 am on 6 October 2010

Supply shortages have caused the cancellation of another wool sale.

The lack of wool coming foward for auction forced the industry to call off the sale scheduled a fortnight ago, and now this week's combined North and South Island sale has also been cancelled.

The drop has been aggravated by the poor weather that has disrupted shearing.

Next week's sales will go ahead, with about 19,000 bales up for auction.

The wool shortage has, however, reinforced the steady lift in prices.

Last week's combined North and South Island sale saw a further surge, with carpet-style coarser crossbred wools in especially strong demand.

Full fleece prices rose by 10% and second shears by up to 13%.
