Northland winemakers predict excellent 2010 vintage

Northland winemakers are relishing the effects of last summer's drought, which, though devastating for many farmers, has produced some intensely flavoured wines.

Monty Knight from Okahu Estate near Kaitaia says the 2010 vintage in Northland is exceptional, with the extreme dry conditions proving perfect for grape ripening and flavouring.

He says in the Far North it was dry from October until almost June which meant smaller crops and berries, more intense flavours and no rot.

He says Northland will have amazing wines coming out of the 2010 vintage, the only difficulty is that there may not be enough of them, but that could help them gain a good price.
