Shearing legend David Fagan, turns 49 later this month but his performance at the New Zealand Spring Shears at Waimate during the weekend shows he's still a top contender for national shearing titles this year.

He won the Spring Shears open ahead of Dion King and current world champion Cam Ferguson.

It was his 10th win in that event, and his 604th win in 29 years of open-class shearing competition.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's sheep dog trials team has won a two-test series against Australia.

Australia took the first test, but New Zealand won the second test by a big enough margin to give it a 69-point overall lead.
