Fresh vegetables could be in short supply

Growers say some fresh vegetables could be in short supply and at higher prices until Christmas because of the effect of recent bad weather on crops.

Heavy rain and high winds have affected the new potato harvest in Pukekohe.

Grower Kevin Wilcox says his new season crop is down by almost 20%.

Gisborne could lose its latest crop of sweetcorn, onions, lettuce and tomatoes due to flooding.

Horticulture New Zealand says many growers will have a lot less to sell.

Chief executive Peter Silcock says this will effect the supply of vegetables right through until Christmas.

He says emissions trading taxes and the increase in GST on 1 October, have already increased vegetable prices.
