Landcorp gets serious about water conservation

Conserving and using water more efficiently is becoming a bigger issue for the state owned farming enterprise Landcorp.

With more than 100 farms through the country, running hundreds of thousands sheep, dairy and beef cattle and deer, Landcorp is a significant user of water.

Chief executive Chris Kelly says an increasing focus on water conservation has led it to start overhauling its irrigation systems.

On one property, he says, water use was reduced by a third, while grass growth was increased by a third. The $3 million project paid for itself in about two years, he says.
