Canterbury dairy company Synlait's joint venture agreement with a Chinese company is official.

The Chinese government has approved the Bright Dairy and Food company's $82 million investment in Synlait's processing business.

The joint venture is constructing a second milk powder plant at Dunsandel that will produce more than 10 tonnes of wholemilk powder or eight tonnes of infant formula a day.

Synlait Milk chief executive officer John Penno says construction is a third of the way through and on target for commissioning in September next year.
