New Zealand Winegrowers says recent wins in two overseas wine competitions will add much-needed value to New Zealand wine.
New Zealand wines took home a quarter of the trophies and more than 130 medals at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit show. A record six out of 12 categories were also won at the Australian Winestate magazine's Wine of the Year awards.
NZW global marketing director Chris Yorke says the wine awards are very positive and come at a time when the industry is struggling with low prices and an oversupply of grapes.
He believes the success is down to the Air New Zealand national wine awards which, he says, has helped the industry improve the quality of its wines.
A record number of wines were awarded gold medals in the national awards last week, with the trophy winners due to be announced this Saturday.
