World lamb shearing record bid abandoned

7:45 am on 28 November 2010

An attempt at Kahuranaki station in Hawke's Bay to break the nine-hour world lamb shearing record has been abandoned.

Steve Stoney, 41, from Napier was trying to become the oldest person to break the record of 866 lambs, which was set in January 2007 by another Hawke's Bay shearer, Dion King.

Stoney, who began shearing at 5am on Friday, had to shear 24 lambs every 15 minutes for nine hours to set a new mark.

But he stopped after shearing 163 lambs in two hours, which was at least 30 down on what was needed to break the record.

Shearing Sports New Zealand says there could be another attempt on the record in January by Ivan Scott, an Irish shearer based in New Zealand.
