Kiwifruit committee to discuss independent board

4:42 pm on 1 December 2010

The Kiwifruit Industry Advisory committee is to meet on Wednesday evening to make a decision on the make-up of an independent board overseeing strategies relating to the vine killing disease PSA.

The board will decide on a funding package for growers affected by the disease and develop a long-term disease management strategy.

A spokesperson for kiwifruit marketer Zespri says the advisory committee will also make recommendations as to who should head the board.

Meanwhile, the number of kiwifruit growers affected by PSA continues to rise.

Test results of leaf samples have confirmed 96 orchards now have the disease - 40% more than a week ago.

Orchards where there have been negative test results have risen from 286 last Wednesday to 482.

The number of emails which growers have sent to Zespri to report symptoms of PSA or no symptoms has slowed down, with only 100 new ones in the past week.
