Some of the country's fastest shearers raised more than $12,000 for families of the Pike River coal mine disaster at the weekend.

The Shearing Sports Charity Speedshear event was held in Reefton on the West Coast in support of the Pike River families.

David Fagan, 49, from Te Kuiti, stunned the crowd by winning the final with the quickest time of just over 15 seconds.

Speed shearing is a contest to see who can shear a single sheep the fastest, but the quality of the shearing is also taken into account.
