Central Otago expecting bumper cherry crop

Summerfruit New Zealand says cherry exports from Central Otago could double this season because of good growing conditions over the past two months.

The organisation says the weather has produced exceptional fruit and a bumper crop.

The chairman of Summerfruit New Zealand, Gary Bennetts, says exports from Central Otago are expected to be very good, so long as conditions stay fine until the harvest begins next week.

He says the crop could amount to 3000 tonnes, double last last year's export figure.

Mr Bennetts says other cherry growing regions in New Zealand have also had a good growing season.

He says the country's biggest cherry export market is Taiwan, followed by South Korea and Thailand.
