Improved returns for kiwifruit growers

Kiwifruit company Seeka says lower fruit losses following improvements to storage have helped to boost grower returns.

The Bay of Plenty-based company told growers at its annual meeting on Thursday that improved prices can also be attributed to a drop in the New Zealand dollar.

Chief executive Michael Franks says the 2008 season has seen a significant improvement in performance compared with 2007, with less fruit losses and more fruit harvested.

He says the revised forecast is a big improvement on last year's prices, when growers received around $27,000 per hectare, and the outlook for next year is looking reasonably good.
