Tasman farmers urge more flood safeguard work

1:14 pm on 25 January 2011

Farmers in the Tasman District say more work needs to be done to safeguard them from flooding.

Roads, bridges and fences were washed out just after Christmas, when 400mm of rain fell in a 24-hour period

Golden Bay Federated Farmers president Graham Ball says more gravel needs to be removed from rivers in the area to improve their ability to deal with high flows.

He says farmers should be able to remove gravel from the river bed themselves without a lengthy consent process under the Resource Management Act.
