MAF biosecurity record seen as not good enough

Farmers and growers say the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry, which is in charge of biosecurity, is not performing well enough and is undermining New Zealand's export market.

MAF says there were 199 incursions in the last five years, when an organism - not previously known to be present - was discovered and has probably begun spreading.

Federated Farmers says MAF needs to do more work at the border.

But the ministry says it successfully keeps out a number of high profile pests and the public should be confident it knows the high risk areas.
