Heinz Wattie which has the largest pea processing operation in Australasia, says it's had a very successful harvesting season in Canterbury.

Harvesting began on 28 November and finished on 1 February. Most of the crop is for export to Australia, Asia and the United States. Most of it is frozen.

The company has contracts with almost 200 growers to produce between 20,000 - 30,000 thousand tonnes of peas.

Agricultural manager Bruce Snowdon says the green bean harvest has just started in Canterbury, and tomato processing will begin shortly in Hawke's Bay
